title = "The amino acid sequence of T4 bacteriophage lysozyme",

note = "Funding Information: is found coniirming these three overlaps, we cannot exclude the possibility ofthe insertion of a few amino acids at any of these points. By the same token, we cannot absolutely exclude the possibility of a rearrangement of the two internal blocks of amino acids that are bounded by these three points, accompanied by insertions of the appropriate amino acids. However, we consider any gross departure from the sequence presented in Fig. 1 as rather unlikely, because of the good agreement of the calculated amino acid composition from the sequence with the observed amino acid composition of the whole protein as shown in Table 1. The molecular weight was calculated from this structure to be 18,134 which is also in good accordance with the molecular weight of 17,000\& 1,000 obtained by the Archibald treatment of an ultracentrifugal analysis of the enzyme (Inouye, Tsugita, Terzaghi \& Strtisinger, manuscript in preparation). No common first-order structure is found between T4 phage lysozyme and egg white lysozyme but the distribution of basic, acidic and hydrophobic amino acids seems to be similar. It is of interest that in T4 phage lysozyme which contains 31 amino acids residues more than egg white lysozyme, there is no S-S bridge in contrast with the four S-S bridges in egg white lysozyme. This might be one of the reasons why T4 phage lysozyme is more unstable than egg white lysozyme. The authors are grateful to Drs G. Streisinger, E. Terzaghi, Y. Okada, Messrs M. Imada, M. J. Lorena and Miss E. Akaboshi for their help in all phases of this work. Also the authors wish to express their thanks to Miss K. Watanabe for her technical assistance.
