Social Capacities for Collaborative Leadership Flourishing

Research output: Chapter in Book/Report/Conference proceeding › Chapter

Abstract

Collaborative Leadership for Flourishing requires alignment around purpose-namely, a clear and meaningful reason for an organization's existence beyond financial gains that encompasses its intention to make broader societal contributions for betterment. In this way, purpose connects the three pillars of sustainability-namely, people, planet, and prosperity-and highlights the transformative potential of purpose-driven organizations to the pursuit of sustainable development. Here, purpose-driven organizations driving their adaptive transformation through sustainability are explored to draw out key enablers that might be adopted more widely with a focus on collaborative leadership for human flourishing. Drawing on insights from interviews with CEOs, together with relevant case materials, it is clear that purpose, human flourishing, and sustainability are inextricably connected. Purpose helps people navigate volatile, uncertain, complex, and ambiguous conditions and captures the organization's core values, aspirations, and commitment to stakeholders, including customers, employees, communities, and the environment. Purpose creates a shared sense of meaning and offers a framework for long-term sustainable growth fueled by human flourishing.
