Abstract

The article explores the theme of post-paranoia in French animation, with a focus on the film Avril et le monde truqué by Christian Desmares and Franck Ekinci. It defines post-paranoia as a contemporary form of paranoia that operates within a framework where the self is constantly threatened by an evolving and protean other. This shift from classical paranoia, which deals with clearly defined oppositions (e.g. East vs. West), to post-paranoia, reflects the complexities of modern political and social life. The article examines how French animation, including dystopian and post-apocalyptic narratives (Tante Hilda!, La prophétie des grenouilles), reflects this theme of post-paranoia, often portraying worlds manipulated by deceit, conspiracy, and distrust. In Avril et le monde truqué, set in a steampunk, alternate history, the protagonist faces a world governed by falsification and manipulation. The narrative blends post-paranoia with themes of uchronia (alternate history) and steampunk, raising questions about truth, reality, and power. The article discusses how the film’s aesthetic and narrative, drawing heavily from the graphic style of Jacques Tardi, underscore the sociopolitical critique present in the film. It also ties this theme to broader concerns about scientific ethics, ecological destruction, and authoritarianism, situating the film as a form of political and cultural critique within the broader context of French animation.
