Abstract
Many depressions in coastal dunes created by wave erosion and eolian deposition are erroneously called blowouts. Examination of one such depression at Island Beach State Park, New Jersey, indicates cyclical development: storm erosion and beach-dune movement, formation of crenulations, seaward foredune expansion, shore-perpendicular ridge growth creating hollows, and increased local relief by eolian accretion. The cycle may be renewed by major storm erosion. Wave processes have a leading role in location, orientation, and shape of dune hollows. -from Authors
